Welcome
to the About: Epsilon Beta Section.
Epsilon Beta Chapter began as a colony of the Phi Kappa Tau
National Fraternity during 1985 spring semester at West Virginia
Tech. The colony was started by 15 undergraduates who were
dissatisfied with the current conditions on the West Virginia
Tech campus. There was much hatred between and directed toward
the existing Greeks. The Phi Kappa Tau’s hoped to show
the rest of the campus that though harmony and cooperation,
they could bring new life and vigor to an old campus. They
could make a difference.
The colony did not have a house in the beginning, so they
held their weekly meetings in the Vining Library, and social
events were held at various brother’s apartments. During
the fall semester of 1985, four Brothers moved into a house
at 1006 3rd Avenue. This became the first “unofficial”
Phi Kappa Tau house.
Throughout 1986, the fraternity began to grow and become
know on campus. They held their first philanthropic event
which raised $850 for the Children’s Heart Foundation.
They also became the first fraternity colony to win the Greek
Week competition at West Virginia Tech.
By the end of 1986, the members of Phi Kappa Tau realized
they needed a larger more permanent house in order to be competitive
with the other fraternities on campus. They began to search
and found an ideal house located at 810 3rd Avenue in Montgomoery.
The Brothers secured the necessary financing and purchased
the house, which is currently the home of Phi Kappa Tau.
During 1987 the fraternity was going strong. However, they
were still only a “colony” and not a permanent
chapter of The Phi Kappa Tau National Fraternity. The Brothers
were required to submit a written report to the National Headquarters
which documented the entire operation, membership orientation,
and financial management of the fraternity. The National Headquarters
approved the colony’s petition to become a chapter.
On November 21, 1987, Epsilon Beta Chapter was installed as
the 122nd Chapter of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity by the National
Executive Director at a banquet held in Charleston, West Virginia.
